Freedom was never a destination Harriet Tubman intended to reach alone.

Born into slavery, Tubman escaped in 1849 and then repeatedly returned to guide family members and others towards freedom through the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, she served the Union cause as a nurse, scout and spy. In later life, she continued working for her community and speaking in support of women’s suffrage.
