The Clinton Twelve centres a line of young Black students walking through a hostile crowd during the Clinton school integration crisis of 1956. Their clothing is reimagined in vivid African-inspired textiles while the surrounding scene remains in black and white—a powerful visual distinction between the young people carrying change forward and those determined to stand in their way.
The luminous halos do not soften the tension of the original photograph. They ask us to see the students clearly: young people with books in their hands, dignity in their bearing and futures they had every right to pursue.
There is courage here, but there should never have needed to be. Beneath the weight of history were young people doing something entirely ordinary—walking to class—and helping to transform American education with every step.
