Sunday Best gathers five boys around the bonnet of a car on Easter morning in Chicago’s South Side. Their carefully chosen clothes, confident poses and wonderfully individual expressions capture the quiet ceremony of dressing up—and the unmistakable pleasure of being seen.
Vivid African-inspired textiles and contemporary colour heighten what was already present in Russell Lee’s historic photograph: style, friendship, personality and ordinary Black life worthy of attention. The artwork does not ask the boys to become symbols. It allows them to remain children—serious and playful, composed and completely themselves.
Warm, nostalgic and full of character, this Black history art print celebrates a past too rarely preserved with such tenderness.
